Glass Recycling in Toledo & Northwest Ohio

Toledo earned its name as the Glass City through generations of innovation. But today, too much of that glass is ending up in the wrong place — the landfill.

Roughly 11 million tons of glass is disposed of in the U.S. each year, and only about a third of it gets recycled. Glass deposited in landfills takes approximately 1 million years to decompose. The good news? It doesn’t have to be this way.

Glass is one of the most recyclable materials on the planet. When it’s collected and processed properly, it can be reused over and over again — reducing energy use, cutting carbon emissions, and keeping raw materials in the ground where they belong.

Introducing GRIT: Glass Recycling in Toledo, Done Locally

GRIT (Glass Recycling in Toledo) is a hyper-local initiative built for Northwest Ohio. Powered by NOIC and processed by Recycle Services, GRIT exists to close the loop on glass, right here in the community where glass manufacturing began.

Drop off your glass at one of our collection bins across Lucas County. It’s free, it’s easy, and it makes a real difference.

Why Glass Recycling Matters

For the Environment

Glass deposited in landfills never truly goes away. Recycling glass reduces the need to mine raw materials like sand, soda, and lime, and uses significantly less energy than making glass from scratch. Reaching our annual collection goal would remove the equivalent of 670 tons of carbon emissions — the same as taking 145 cars off the road for a year.

For Our Community

What you recycle here stays here. Glass collected through GRIT is processed locally at Recycle Services’ facility in Sylvania, Ohio, then sold back to manufacturers, supporting local industry and keeping Toledo’s glass legacy alive. This is Toledo glass recycling working the way it should.

For Businesses

Glass is one of the heaviest items to dispose of, making trash pickup costly. GRIT provides free collection for bars, restaurants, and businesses — directly lowering disposal costs while doing right by the environment.

Where to Recycle Glass in Toledo & Surrounding Counties

Many counties do not accept glass in curbside bins. That’s exactly why GRIT exists.

Glass recycling in Lucas County and glass recycling in Wood County are both supported through GRIT’s growing network of drop-off locations. No curbside pickup? No problem. Just set your glass aside and bring it to the nearest bin.

How It Works

1.

Collect

Set aside your glass bottles, jars, and containers at home or at your business.

2.

Drop Off

Bring your glass to a GRIT collection bin in your area. No sorting required.

3.

We Handle The Rest

Recycle Services picks up the glass, processes it into high-quality cullet at their Sylvania facility, and delivers it back to manufacturers to be made into new products.

Our Goal

GRIT has set an annual target of recovering 2 million pounds of glass in Northwest Ohio. Every bottle you drop off moves us closer.
60,000 pounds collected and counting.
