A Toledo consortium of universities, First Solar Inc., and glassmakers intends to apply for $35 million, the maximum available, as part of the Ohio Department of Development’s Innovation Hub grant program.

The Northwest Ohio Innovation Consortium expects to file a letter of intent with the department later this week after the competition opens on Friday, said Roger Smith, the consortium’s regional innovation officer.

The University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University, and Owens Community College will be at the forefront of the application, said Tim Mayle, executive director of the Center to Advance Manufacturing and a co-lead of the consortium application.

Mr. Mayle said he envisions university research being aligned with private-sector efforts to create patents, new businesses, and ultimately jobs for the area.
